Compact design of its 1250 cc. See, DOHC, a 60-degree V-shaped engine with noticeably smaller and integrated crankcase and transmission not only reduces volume compared to current engines and HD-class transmission, but also should reduce some weight. Cast aluminum foot supports, hanger for exhaust gases and the pendulum do not look elegant, but they seem durable, and aluminum is better than steel here. The subframe of the grill and the main frame are also made of aluminum, the balance tilts to a perfectly acceptable weight. Water cooling adds to the paddle, however.
Seat height is an ever-important measurement for any large dirt-adventuring motorcycle, and too-high seats are a major complaint. Using the 19-inch front wheel as a measuring stick, seat height is approximated at 33 inches—the same as the R1200GS. How the width of the subframe and seat shape will affect perceived height is unknown, of course, until we ride it.
Michelin Anakee Wild tires fitted to tubeless cross-spoke wheels hint that this machine has serious dirt chops. The rear tire is driven by a chain and sprocket—yet another hint at dirt worthiness.
Suspension duties are handled by a black-anodized inverted fork that looks to be 48mm in diameter. It’ll also be manually adjustable, according to the fork caps spotted at 1:23. The shock is a piggyback unit which could have an external preload adjuster; manual, electric, or hydraulic is the question here. The shock is attached to the swingarm via linkage (look far left at 1:25), again hinting at proper off-road suspension performance. A test rider jumping at 1:20 confirms that H-D expects the Pan America to lose contact with terra firma.
Harley-Davidson’s senior vice president and chief operating officer, Michelle Cumbier, said Pan America has many advanced technologies. What exactly does this mean? We will see, but the necessary ADV functions are included, such as cruise control, advanced ABS, driving modes and traction control, the ABS controller can be seen hidden inside the front of the subframe and connected to the Brembo brakes.
Creature comforts include wide, tapered handlebars on tall risers that look to put the rider in a comfortable standing position. An adjustable windscreen is witnessed at 1:23 with an adjuster knob that looks to move the screen 4 inches or so.
The Pan America enters a crowded and mature adventure market. Offerings from nearly every manufacturer create space that varies widely in capability and price. Based on wheel size and overall stance, Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250 the BMW R1200GS end of the segment with a focus on excellent street handling and touring comfort with a solid dose of off-road capability. This is the sweet spot of the market; adventure outsells every other adventure motorcycle by a wide margin. H-D intention of competing with more more hard-core models like the KTM Adventure R models, and why should it? The number of buyers looking at something that has Dakar DNA is too big for its goals. The H-D Motor Company is planning significant rider and buyer growth in the future and the best way to achieve that is to aim for the target-rich arena and do it well.
As a whole, the Pan America is a cohesive unit that looks much more put together than a typical prototype; and with just 17 months until 2020, the gray version pictured should be very similar to the finished product. There are plenty of questions left to answer, engine power and torque being the biggest, but this first look revealed significantly more than would have been allowed by Harley-Davidson in the past. In the space of just 13 seconds, The Motor Company gave us a lot to consider regarding the performance and ability of the Pan America. After a hard look, there is no doubt Harley-Davidson is putting it full developmental prowess behind the company’s new direction and the Pan America is proof
